We’ve put all our hopes for the Indonesian startup scene in young talented geeks, fluent in php, Zend and Klingon. But hell, of all people it’s the celebs that are rockin’ the startup scene. As if they don’t have enough going for themselves. And not the just any kind of celebs. No siree! Indonesia now has her own Justin Timberlake in the persona of no one less than the talented and lovely Cut Tari. Famous in Indonesia for being a soap star, world famous for a case of “mistaken identity” in a pron video.

A Reckless Simplification And Uncool Provocation

September 18, 2011 by Remco | 0 comments

Sangat Pedas, a blog that loves the use of exaggeration and sarcasm. We love controversy, provocation, discussions, drama and an occasional confrontation.

Some of you might remember the post in with the snappy title “Social Media Marketing is a HOAX!” in which I personally argued, amongst others, that the value of Social Media is highly over-rated. Well, people got upset, big time!

When waking up with a hangover this morning quickly checking my Twitter there was an unusual amount of mentions. Lucky for me no “Red Square girls” and after quickly disregarding the mentions by the Tokobagus team members fishing for a salary raise (not even when I’m drunk guys) there were 28 MENTIONS left. All came from the same person whom I’ve never heard of before.

Social Media Marketing is a Hoax!

September 11, 2011 by Remco | 5 Comments

Social media marketingMillions of companies world wide fall victim to Social Media Marketing companies every day #FACT! One of my tweets today that pretty much expresses my feeling about the Social Media Marketing Industry. I also said that the profession Social Media Marketeer is somewhat like a taxi driver, but for the last job you at least need a drivers license and a permit. Pretty bold statements and btw not meant bad towards all the nice taxi drivers.

I realize what I’m getting myself into here, it’s almost impossible to prove the absence of something because just one occurrence will prove me wrong. Obviously I’m talking about successful Social Media Marketing campaigns. And of course there have been successful Social Media campaigns but bear with me to make my point.

Rockto (Should) Make(s) Social Sharing Rock!

September 6, 2011 by Remco | 0 comments

Let’s start this post in Rockto style: Howdy y’all! Now many readers might think I’m an arrogant *beep* who’s only criticizing others and thinks I’m Gods gift to mankind. Well, you might have a point, I haven’t been all that positive about the Indonesian startup scene but that’s gonna change now!

Ever heard of a site called “Rockto”? Huh? Well chances are you’ve never heard of it but you should have. Personally the whole bookmarking/sharing/recommendation phenomenon doesn’t really appeal to me, sites like Digg and Reddit completely passed me by. But somehow Rockto (Rock TOday) is different, Rockto is pretty cool I guess. Rockto is an Indonesian social sharing slash social bookmarking site slash social recommendation site, it’s social anyway and it’s awesome! It’s so 4.0! Rockto is the one Indonesian startup that “as is” could and should conquer the world.

Facebook now leads in 115 of 132 countries

December 22, 2010 by Remco | 0 comments

Probably not surprising but still impressive to see how Facebook slowly but surely beats any local competition in almost any country. Thanks to the diligence work of Italian Vincenzo Cosenza we can give a clear insight in the current social media market and the development over the last 18 months.

While in june 2009 there were still 16 social networks other than Facebook leading in their local market, 18 months later only 11 have withstand the Facebook power which makes Facebook market leader in 115 of 132 countries. Orkut is still market leader in Brasil, V-Kontakte still rules Russia and Zing is still Singapore’s favorite.

Hyper activity on Twitter pays

December 17, 2010 by Remco | 1 Comment

Twitter clockSysomos recently published some nice research on Twitter statistics in 2010 compared to 2009. The highlights of this research shows:

Users with more than 100 friends have increased by three-fold to 21% since 2009.

•  22.5% of users accounted for about 90% of all tweets.
•  80% users have made fewer than 500 tweets.
•  Justin Bieber is one of top two-word phrases and top
name in user’s bios.
•  Significantly more users are disclosing their location, bio
and web information in Twitter profiles.

So it has been a good year for Twitter in which they probably doubled their number of members. What got my attention in the publication was this graph:

Wealth is an advantage, but it also is frankly a responsibility

December 9, 2010 by Remco | 1 Comment

Some feel-good news from the vally. Mark Zuckerberg committed to Bill Gates and Warren Buffet’s initiative called the “Giving Pledge” by agreeing to give most of his wealth to charity. With that commitment Mark joined a list of 57 other multi-millionaire and billionaire individuals and families that sympathise with Andrew Carnegie who argued that fortunes were often wasted by heirs and thus should be put to charitable use. Even though most of Mark’s estimated wealth of $ 6.9 billion is still virtual because it consists of the value of his Facebook shares, he already donated an undisclosed amount to the open social network project Diaspora as well as $100 million to Newark Public Schools.

On behalf of the others I would like to welcome Mark to the “Giving Pledge” Club…..

How to build your community!

November 20, 2010 by Remco | 1 Comment

Founder of WordPressAllow me to introduce the man behind SangatPedas: Matt Mullenweg. Well, actually he probably doesn’t know about the existence of this great blog site that will rule the world but he’s the guy that made it all possible. As founder of WordPress Matt Mullenweg has become one the 25 most influential people on the Internet. Ranked #19 in Alexa world wide and even #8 in Indonesia WordPress has become a global leading player.

So the question every Internet (startup) entrepreneur probably wil be asking is “How did he do that?” On the bottom of this post there’s the audio of a presentation Matt gave on the topic how to get from 0 to 100.000 users. Yeah, I know, audio is so 1.0 and 1999, extremely boring when it doesn’t have a big beat. Well, I promise that besides the annoying intro and outro (someone got really creative with wavelab) it will easily keep your attention and give you crucial information on how to grow your community.

The first hundred thousand are always the hardest and in this session Matt Mullenweg will discuss strategies for scaling your community from 1 to 100,000 users and beyond. Matt will describe his 12 rules, including the importance of obsessing about details, doing your own support, blogging every step of the way, and being a painkiller, not a vitamin.

This is must listen material for anyone running anything on the web, listen to the man, he even managed to drag me into it.[jwplayer config="audio" mediaid="3151"]
