The most important invention in human history, for reelz!

May 5, 2011 by Remco | 0 comments

Hello peepz, as startup entrepreneur you know that the days are always too short and it’s pretty fair to assume life’s to short for everything I got planned or will be planning. Recognize that? Well do we have some great news for you tonight! What if I tell you that you can now look hotter than the hottest model and become physically immortal? Well halleluja-can-I-get-an-amen Yes We Can!

Actually, I found out we already can since 1996 but this news just hasn’t reached me until now, lucky us we’re still alive. After Albert Einstein, Thomas A. Edison and Nikola Tesla (who? this guy) allow me to introduce to you the Genius of this era: Alex Chui, self proclaimed bringer of beauty and eternal life, savior of our earth.

The history of the tablet according to Motorola [video]

December 21, 2010 by Remco | 0 comments

In 2011 Motorola will be launching their Android tablet and they’re already starting some pre-launch promotion. For that they’ve made a somewhat funny video about the history and evolution of the tablet. Funny thing is that there are a lot of negative comments on this video on youtube like that it’s not good marketing practice to bash other products/manufacturers. Actually in general I agree that promoting your own product by bashing the competitors is bad practice but on the other hand it is funny to claim that this device will make the iPad and Galaxy Tab look ancient.

NASA about to announce prove for extraterrestrial life?

December 2, 2010 by Remco | 0 Comments

While everyone is talking about Wikileaks and Julian Assange there seems to be some way much bigger news in the making. Just a few hours from now NASA will hold a press conference with the goal to:

“discuss an astrobiology finding that will impact the search for evidence of extraterrestrial life. Astrobiology is the study of the origin, evolution, distribution and future of life in the universe.”

Now if NASA does an announcement like this you can bet your bottom dollar that they’ve got something big so the entire geek Astrobiology community is guessing what news NASA is about to bring. The most serious guesses are that prove is expected for some micro life form on other planets or “detected chemical evidence of bacteria utilizing it for photosynthesis (by following the elements)”.

Where science meets art

November 27, 2010 by Remco | 0 comments

This would be a nice picture for the category “But what is it?”, but we spare you the frustration. This is the winning picture of the Olympus BioScapes Digital Imaging Competition® which recognizes outstanding images of life science specimens captured through light microscopes, using any magnification, any illumination technique and any brand of equipment.

Basically this is a competition for another kind of geeks, the ones really handy with microscopes, light and photoshop and a special interest for the extreme small specimens on this earth. You’re looking at a frontal section of Phalangium opilio (commonly known as Harvestman or Daddy longlegs) eyes, an ordinary animal you probably wouldn’t pay much attention to. As a geek freak I’m now wondering if I should buy a microscope, I mean how cool is this?!

Anyway, it just reminds me there’s beauty all around us everyday but most of the time we (at least I) fail to notice it. Check the other amazing pica’s here.

They’re messing with our brain! #Samsung

November 18, 2010 by Remco | 0 Comments

You remember the post about the Samsung Galaxy Tab launch? Wasn’t really positive right? Pretty sarcastic actually to people buying it and especially when they are  willing to wait 5 hours in line for it. Guess what! Today, not even three weeks later everything changed and I went to every mall in Jakarta because I simply had to have it, I needed it, can’t live without it. It was thanks to some divine intervention that prevented me from really buying it. In the first two malls it was sold out but the third had it. Getting out my wallet I discovered that my creditcard was missing. Walking disappointed outside I called my business partner who pointed out I should be able to use my maestro back card so I went back but no dice, didn’t have the right payment terminal. But they pointed me to the ATM in the 2nd floor but again that attempt was in vain. Continue Reading →

Power to the engineers!

November 14, 2010 by Remco | 0 Comments

Who says you gotta be an entrepreneur to hit the jackpot, strike the mother load? No need to risk your money, reputation and marriage on a risky stressy startup. Check this. Google offered one of their engineers $ 3.5mln in restricted stock (meaning he can’t sell until he met the requirements of the agreement) to not go work for Facebook. The unknown engineer probably put on his pokerface, faked a long thought process, hesitated a bit before “reluctantly” accepting the offer.

Clearly Google is getting really tired of people wanting to make a move to Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin and has now resorted to some major muscle showing. This following a particular case where a Google engineer, earning $ 150.000 per year, declined a 15% salary raise and shares worth $ 500.000. So after that loss Google decided it was enough and made the next guy an offer he couldn’t refuse.

Cool! Awesome! But what is it?

November 13, 2010 by Remco | 0 Comments

I could consider myself as a modern oldtimer, coming from the ancient pre-computer era. I actually watched black & white television and my first computer was a Commodore VIC 20 with roughly 3500 Bytes (really!) available RAM. I used to rule at Ms. Pacman and Dragon’s Lair but frankly I don’t game anymore (except for Angrybirds) because I basically suck at gaming now. I really have no idea what all the blackberry symbols are about and most of the time I don’t see any faces let alone the emotion they express.

Today I saw this picture on Koprol with the text “New toy” and I really had no idea what I was looking at, blank, clueless. Are these the first signs of old-age kicking in? Am I losing touch with the digital community in which I always counted myself as a innovative and up-to-date member? Will I still be able to remove a virus, install a printer and see the difference between a smartphone and an iPod?

Let’s put this to the test and see how up-to-date the average SangatPedas reader is. We dare you, what is this awesome new toy? Dump any idea in the comments.

From hacker to shredder

October 28, 2010 by Remco | 1 Comment

Maybe I’ve watched to many Hollywood movies but I always thought that after serving time in jail brilliant hackers get exciting jobs at the FBI, CIA or some big multinational. After all, it takes a hacker to find/fight a hacker. Well, not so for Dennis “Coolio” Moran, who used our children’s beloved blue friends to blow away Yahoo’s servers with a “Smurf” attack in 2000. Also he gained himself access to the servers of the US Army, US Airforce and defaced the RSA security website and finally the US Army decided is was enough.

So today, on his 28th birthday, I checked up on him again and found out he just lost/quit his job as paper shredder at the Alaska department of Fish and Game Licensing and is currently looking for a new opportunity, preferably in a non-profit environment. Career-wise it could be better to mention his experience at Yahoo and the US Army in his resume. Anyone interested? Would be a great asset to deface the competition. Well, everyone does stupid things when they’re young so I say give this guy a break before he’s forced to hookup with his blue friends again to pick up his old profession. So happy birthday Dennis from SangatPedas and I really wish you all the best.
